Sustainability

PCE strives to optimise the sustainability benefits of using precast concrete as a structural solution. The environmental credentials of concrete such as its contribution to thermal performance, acoustics, fire resistance, and air tightness are well documented, along with its ability to provide high quality self-finished structures. These benefits, combined with the long-term durability of concrete coupled with smarter designs, offers buildings capable of providing an operational life in excess of 100 years.

PCE works hand in hand with our supply chain partners explore opportunities to use sustainable and recycled materials along with efficient manufacturing processes. Material specifications are developed with innovation and optimisation in mind. Issues such as whole life costs, project geography and opportunities to influence construction efficiencies are key drivers in the selection of products and systems. By specifying smarter solutions, which offer added value, building systems and finishes can be integrated into the precast solution. For example, by providing prefabricated products with integral external facades or fenestration pre-fitted, there are significant reductions in on-site operations. This allows drastic reductions in construction periods and vehicle movements to and from site.

By allowing the detailed design process to drive a lean approach during manufacture and construction, PCE are able to eliminate waste. Lean specification ensures the optimisation of structural elements, material usage and suppliers' resources. This philosophy continues into the construction phase with designs providing the optimum use of site resources whilst minimising the impact on the local environment through construction efficiencies and programme reductions. The sustainability credentials of PCE's construction operations further benefits from the complete removal of activities that have significant impacts upon the environment such as noise pollution and dust.
